TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF APRIL 29 - MAY 3, 2013
Highway work zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Interstate 64

* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Debris removal, clean bridge deck, ditches, shoulders and median. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* Mile marker 29 over Route 639, eastbound and westbound. Bridge repairs with intermittent flagger controlled lane closure on Route 639. Work zone is 1.22 miles from Route 60 and to .53 miles of Route 42. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Estimated completion May 10, 2013, weather permitting.

 

Primary Roads 

* Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) -- Fiber optic cable installations both underground and above ground. Work will include shoulder closures and occasional lane closures. Work zone between the West Virginia Line at Sweet Springs and Route 159 (Dunlap Creek Road) and then continuing on Route 311 north to Route 601 (Tuckahoe Road), then continuing on Route 601 to the West Virginia Line. Estimated work completed June, 2013.

* Various roads – Brush cutting, shoulder repairs and ditching with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 617 – Road closed to all traffic from the intersection of Route 616 (Rich Patch Road) and Route 617 (Jamison Mountain Road) to the intersection of Route 616 and Route 618 (Upper Rich Patch Road) – Road widening and safety improvements. Use Route 618 as detour of the work area. Estimated completion is May 31, 2013.   

* (UPDATE) Route 633 – Replacement of Cowpasture River bridge and approaches. Traffic is now being directed onto new bridge. Traffic will run on stone roadway from 1.14 miles south of Route 634 to 1.20 miles south of Route 634. Be alert for flagger traffic control. Estimated completion is May 17, 2013.
* Route 647 – Pavement work from intersection with Hattie Street to intersection with Horse Mountain View and Mall Road.  Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

* Route 792 – Pavement work from intersection with Horse Mountain View to intersection with Mallow Road.  Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

* Various roads – Shoulder repairs, brush cutting and ditching with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

BATH COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Various roads - Pothole repairs, debris removal and shoulder repairs. Flagger traffic control as needed, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Various roads – Debris removal, grading, pot hole and shoulder repairs, Flagger traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

Interstate 64 

* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound and westbound. Debris removal and cleaning of bridge decks, ditches, shoulders and medians. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 56, eastbound and westbound. Various locations with short duration mobile lane closures for sign inspections. May 2, Midnight to 4 a.m.

 

 

Interstate 81

* Mile marker 173 to 205.5, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and cleaning of bridge decks, ditches, shoulders and medians. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

* (NEW) Mile marker 188 to 221, northbound and southbound. Various locations with short duration mobile lane closures for sign inspections. May 1, 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 195 to 200, northbound lane closures. Truck Climbing Lane project – Paving operations. Monday, April 29 to Thursday, May 2, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

* (NEW) Various locations. Vegetation management with mobile lane closures. Wednesday to Friday, 8 p.m to 7 a.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 – Pavement work from intersection with Route 760 (Golf Course Road) to intersection with Route 684 (Tinkerville Road). Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

* Route 60 (East Midland Trail) – Fiber optic cable installation. Work area between I-81 and City of Buena Vista. Estimated completion end of April.

* Route 60 (West Midland Trail) – Fiber optic cable installation. Work area between Route 850 and City of Lexington. Estimated completion end of April.

* Route 60 (East Nelson Street, City of Lexington) - Bridge over Varner Lane is closed. East Nelson Street traffic from Washington Street to Randolph Street will be rerouted onto Washington Street for the duration of the bridge reconstruction. Watch for detour signs. Estimated completion is Dec. 2013.

* (NEW) Route 130 – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* (NEW) Route 501 – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Ditching and debris pick-up. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 629 - Intermittent flagger controlled lane closures as need from 2.36 miles to Route 780 and 5.01 miles to Route 60 for I-64 bridge repair at Mile Marker 45. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Estimated completion April 2013.

* Route 631 (Old Buena Vista Road) – Single lane closure with flagger traffic control for waterline replacement project. Work area is between Route 11 and Lincoln Road.  Estimated completion mid-June.

* (NEW) Route 712 – Bridge work in conjunction with the I-81 Truck Climbing Lane project. Flagging operations with temporary holds on traffic as needed. Friday, April 26, 9 a.m.

* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Various roads – Sweeping bridges and intersections, pothole repairs, grading, ditching, pipe replacement, tree removal and brush cutting. Flagger traffic control as needed, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

Primary Roads

* Route 220 – Shoulder repairs at various locations with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Route 250 – Brush cutting from McDowell to Route 614 with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Various roads – Street sweeping, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m.to 3 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 616 - Bridge over Shaw Fork. Flagger traffic control for abrasive cleaning and painting. Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

* (NEW) Route 619 – Bridge over Bullpasture River. Flagger traffic control for abrasive cleaning and painting. May 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  

* (UPDATE) Route 678 – Shoulder closure for shoulder improvement project. Work zone 1.37 miles south from Route 615 and 1.93 north miles to Route 612. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with flagger traffic control. Estimated completion May 24.

* Various roads – Pothole repairs with flagger traffic control, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

Interstate 64
* (NEW) Mile marker 87 to 96, eastbound and westbound. Various locations with short duration mobile lane closures for sign inspections. May 2, Midnight to 4 a.m.

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 96 to 106 on Afton Mountain, eastbound and westbound – Left lane and right and left shoulder closures for installation of rock safety fencing and cable barrier/guardrail, Monday, April 26 through Friday, May 3, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Expected completion May 2013.

* (NEW) Mile marker 100.3 (Albemarle County) to Exit 96 (Augusta County) – Traffic will be restricted in both directions  between Charlottesville (Albemarle County) and Waynesboro (Augusta County) for 30 to 45 minutes at various times throughout the day while unstable soil is removed from Afton Mountain slope above the roadway. Work will start at 9 a.m. on April 29 and end at 8 p.m. daily until work is completed, estimated for May 3.

 

 Interstate 81

* (NEW) Mile marker 188 to 221, northbound and southbound. Various locations with short duration mobile lane closures for sign inspections. May 1, 8 p.m. to 12 midnight.

* Mile marker 205.5 to 237, northbound and southbound – Debris removal and cleaning of bridge decks, ditches, shoulders and medians. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Primary Roads

* Route 11 (Lee Highway, Greenville), northbound and southbound – Single lane closure northbound for sewer construction. March 28 to April 20, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Estimated completion is November 30, 2013.

* Route 340 – Waynesboro, Delphine Avenue Project. Installation of sanitary line and waterline at various locations on Delphine Ave., with retaining wall placement along Delphine Ave. to 4th Street. Be alert for lane closures and flagger traffic control. Work is Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 613 (Old Greenville Road) – Road closure for bridge and guardrail work. Work zone is across South River near the Village of Greenville, 0.39 miles east of Route 613 and 0.17 miles west of Route 1201 (Palmer Street). March 25 through May 2, 2013, day and night work hours.

* Route 662 – Sanitary sewer work with shoulder closure, March 28 to May 2, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* Route 705 (Scott Christian Road) closed on Thursday, April 25 between Route 703 (Hewitt road) and route 689 (Rippetoe Lane) for railroad crossing replacement.

*  Route 742 (Toll Gate Road) – Railroad crossing work located .25 mile east of Route 11. Occasional shoulder closures.  Work is April 16-30.

* (NEW) Route 748 (Flint Hill Road) – Road construction west of Mt. Sidney, from Route 626 (Seawright Springs Road) to Route 696 (Sidney Gap Road). Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion July 31, 2013, weather permitting.

* Route 1050 – Pavement work from intersection with Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) to cul-de-sac. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

* Route 1316 – Pavement work from intersection with Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) cul-de-sac. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.
 

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY  

Interstate 81 

* Mile marker 237 to 257, northbound and southbound – Clean debris left side and median, repair signs and ruts. Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* Mile marker 240 to 245, southbound – Repair fences. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

 Primary Roads

* (NEW) Route 11 – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

* Route 11 (South Main Street) from Route 918 (Mill Street) to 0.2 miles south of Route 918 - bridge replacement over North River at intersection with Route 727 (Airport Road). Temporary lane shift (10 foot lanes) for duration of the project. Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013.  

* Route 33 onto Route 829 (Independent Road/Mt. Harmon Road).  Alternate lane closures for turn lane extensions. West of Elkton. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Traffic controlled by signs, arrow boards and other traffic control devices.  Estimated completion May 3.

* Route 42 (North Main Street) at the intersection of Route 617 (Church Street) in the town of Timberville.  Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control for utility work. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion end of summer.

 

Secondary Roads 

* Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 (Fleeburg Road, Page County) and Route 609. Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 617 (Church Street, Town of Timberville) – Utility upgrades with intermittent lane closures controlled by flaggers between Route 42 and Route 1521 (East Riverside Drive). Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion end of summer.

* Route 672 (McGaheysville Road to Lawyer Road) – Installation of ditches. April 22 through April 26, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Flagging operations as needed. Expect some delays. Estimated completion September 2013.

* Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.

* Route 918 (Mill Street) will be temporarily closed to traffic from the Route 11 (South Main Street) intersection as part of the bridge replacement work on Route 11 and Route 727 (Airport Road).  Route 918 can be accessed from Route 867 (Old Bridgewater Road). Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013. 

* (NEW) Various roads – Utility tree trimming.  Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

PAGE COUNTY

Primary Road 

* Route 340 – Bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway and approaches, 1.40 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines to 3.50 miles south of the Page and Warren County lines. Daily lane closures with flagger traffic control. Shoulder closures, 24 hours-a-day. Motorists should use extreme caution and obey posted speed limit. Estimated completion is fall 2013.

 

Secondary Roads

* Route 603 (Fleeburg Road) – Naked Creek Bridge Project. Replacement work at the intersection of Route 603 and Route 609 (Naked Creek Road, Rockingham County).  Periodic temporary lane closures, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion is April 2013.

* Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, is permanently closed. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to the intersection of Route 686. Signs will be posted.

* Route 691 (Dellinger Acres Road in the Mt. Jackson area). Road closure May 6 at 8 a.m. until May 17, 3:30 p.m. for bridge deck replacement. Traffic will be detoured as follows:

Westbound traffic will use Route 42 North (Senedo Road) to route 779 West (Ridge Hollow Road).
Eastbound traffic will use Route 779 East (Ridge Hollow Road) to Route 42 South (Senedo Road).

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

 

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

Interstate 81

* (UPDATE) Mile marker 273 to 298, northbound and southbound.  Debris pickup. Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

* (NEW) Route 7, eastbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations. Work zone from .02 miles east of Route 612 north (Castleman Road) to Shenandoah River bridge. Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Estimated completion May 17, 2013.

* Various roads – Sweeping. Monday to Friday.

 

Secondary Roads

* (NEW) Route 601 (Old Blue Ridge Road) – Paving operations. Work zone from Route 7 to .12 miles north of Route 650 (Mount Weather Road). Flagger traffic control with pilot truck. Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion May 17, 2013.

* Route 1014 (Page Street) in the Town of Berryville - Parking lanes on east side of Page Street closed during construction of new of new sidewalk from Liberty Street (Route 1005) to Fairfax Street (Route 1026).  Estimated completion May 17, 2013.

Secondary Roads

* Route 631 (Gooney Manor Loop) from Route 613 to 1.90 south of Route 632. Flagger traffic control for road grading and surface treatment. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Estimated completion July 26, 2018.

* Various roads – Utility tree trimming. Flagger traffic control during daylight hours, Monday to Friday.

 

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.
