TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WEEK OF AUGUST 5 TO AUGUST 9, 2013
Highway Work Zones in the Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

 

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for roadside debris removal and ditch cleaning. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 7 to 16, eastbound and westbound – Be alert for roadside cleaning of bridge slopes. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 25 to 26 (NEW), eastbound and westbound – Bridge inspections over Commercial Avenue and Smith Creek. Eastbound single lane closure, August 5, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Westbound single lane closure, August 6, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mile marker 39 to 0, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as need for tree trimming around signs. Tuesday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 173 to 205.1, northbound and southbound – Be alert for roadside debris removal, tree trimming around signs and cleaning bridge slopes. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Mile marker 177.2, northbound – Right shoulder closure for repairs to bridge over Route 692 and Cedar Creek. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 30, 2013.

Mile marker 180.8, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closure for bridge repair over Route 11 at Exit 180 (Fancy Hill). Also southbound I-81 left exit ramp narrows.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 16, 2013.

Mile marker 183 to 193, northbound and southbound – Lane closures as needed for spot milling and paving. Monday and Tuesday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Mile marker 195 to 200 (UPDATE), northbound Truck Climbing Lane project lane closures:  August 5 (mile marker 199 to 202) – Single left lane closure from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to for drainage work in the area. August 6 (mile marker 195 to 196) – Single left lane closure from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to complete sign installation in this area. August 7 (mile marker 195 to 200) – Single right lane mobile closure from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to complete permanent reflective marker installation in this area.  August 8 (mile marker 198 to 199) – Single lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to complete milling and paving in this area. 

 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 – Paving work from Route 760 (Golf Course Road) to Route 648 (Tinkerville Road). Flagger controlled northbound and southbound lane closures as needed, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

Route 11 at I-81 Exit 180 (Fancy Hill) – Flagger-controlled lane closures for repairs to I-81 bridge. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 16, 2013.

Route 60 (East Nelson Street, Lexington) – Bridge over Varner Lane is closed. East Nelson Street traffic from Washington Street to Randolph Street will be rerouted onto Washington Street for the duration of the bridge reconstruction. Watch for detour signs. Estimated completion is December 2013.

Various roads – Mowing operations with signs for traffic control. Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 706 (Borden Grant Trail)  – Road closed .05 mile north of Route 705 (Mountain View Road) August 13, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for pipe replacement. Rain dates August 14 or 15.

Route 250, eastbound and westbound – Lane closures as needed for paving from Route 636 to Waynesboro city limits. Flagger traffic control. Sunday to Saturday, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

Route 340 – Left and right lane closures for line painting. Area north of Waynesboro city limits to  0.81 miles south of Route 619. August 5 to August 9, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Route 340 (North Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Paving operations and water/sewer line work continues, with side street closures, lane closures and lane shifts as needed. Monday to Saturday. Estimated completion end of August.

Route 358 (Woodrow Wilson Avenue) – Closed for grading, paving and sidewalk work from Route 880 (James Anderson Road) to Route 887 (Vance Lane). Traffic will be detoured. Estimated completion Sept. 6, 2013.

Route 363 Project at Blue Ridge Community College will widen north and south entrances lanes and include right and left turn lanes out of the college onto Route 11. Estimated completion Aug. 16, 2013.

Route 629 – Be alert for geological field studies in the Deerfield area (0.5 mile south of the Route 629/250 intersection) as part of a geohazards conference at James Madison University. Watch for informational signage and attendees crossing the road. July 30, 9 a.m. to noon.

Route 662 (NEW)Slurry seal at various locations, August 5 to August 13.  Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Be watchful for signage and flaggers.

Route 698 (Wise Hollow Road) – Road construction from Route 690 (Summit Church Road) to the Rockingham County line. Flagger control Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 7, 2013.

Route 701 (Howardsville Road) between Route 11 (Lee Highway) and Route 613 (Old Greenville Road) – Right shoulder closures with possible single lane closures for installation of right turn lane for C. Layman Subdivision. Monday to Friday, 8.a.m. to 5.p.m.  Estimated completion Aug. 31, 2013. 

Route 748 (Flint Hill Road) – Road construction west of Mount Sidney, from Route 626 (Seawright Springs Road) to Route 696 (Sidney Gap Road). Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 7, 2013, weather permitting.

Route 754 – Resurfacing project that will include pipe installation, construction of new ditch lines, grading of surfaces and paving operations - Shoulder and lane closures as needed, controlled by flaggers. August 1 to Nov. 15, 2013.

Route 828 (Cattle Scales Road) – Pavement work with flagger traffic control. Expected completion October 2013.

Route 11 (South Main Street) from Route 918 (Mill Street) to 0.2 miles south of Route 918 – Bridge replacement over North River at intersection with Route 727 (Airport Road). Temporary lane shift (10 foot lanes) for duration of the project. Flagging operations as needed. Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Sidewalk construction from Route 701 (Cooks Creek Road) to Route 726 (Erickson Avenue). Flagger controlled lane closures. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 23, 2013.

Route 42 (NEW)Left and right lane closures for milling, paving and line painting, from Route 1415 to Route 259. August 6 to August 20, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. 

Route 42 (North Main Street) at Route 617 (Church Street) in Timberville – Intermittent lane closures with flagger traffic control for utility work. Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Estimated completion end of summer.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Eastbound shoulder closure work between Harrisonburg city limits and Route 726 (Stone Spring Road). Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion Aug. 1, 2013.

Route 259 – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday. Estimated completion end of summer.

Route 340 – Install new traffic signal at Route 1706 intersection. Flagger controlled traffic during daylight hours. Estimated completion Sept. 30, 2013.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 617 (Church Street, Town of Timberville) – Utility upgrades with intermittent lane  closures controlled by flaggers between Route 42 and Route 1521 (East Riverside Drive). Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion end of summer.

Route 626 (Sandy Bottom Road) (NEW)Road closed 1.2 miles east of Route 628 (Beldor Road) and 0.08 miles from dead end of Route 626 (Sandy Bottom Road) for bridge replacement over Tributary to Hawksbill Creek. August 12 and 13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, all work weather permitting. Emergency routes and procedures will be in place during the closure. 

Route 672 (Pineville Road) – Road closed to through traffic from McGaheysville Road to Lawyer Road (1.275 miles) for road demolition and reconstruction. One lane will remain open for property owners and residents only. No through traffic. Expect delays. Work this week will run Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion September 2013.

Route 726 (Stone Spring Road) (NEW)One day road closure on August 7. Follow detour signs from Peach Grove Avenue to Port Republic Road (Route 253).

Route 726 (Stone Spring Road and Peach Grove Avenue) – New road construction to extend Southeast Connector. Possible shoulder closures controlled by signs, from 0.512 miles east of Harrisonburg city limits to 0.149 miles west of city limits. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion November 2014.

Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge work from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice.  Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013.

Route 730 (Community Center Road) – Alternate lane closures from Route 731 (Community Center Road) to Route 257 – Paving operations. Flagger controlled traffic. Estimated completion July 31, 2013.

Route 731 – Road closed to through traffic from Route 730 (Community Center Road) to Augusta County line for slope repairs. July 29 to July 31, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Route 918 (Mill Street) – Closed to traffic from the Route 11 (South Main Street) intersection as part of the bridge replacement work on Route 11 and Route 727 (Airport Road).  Route 918 can be accessed from Route 867 (Old Bridgewater Road). Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013.

Various roads (11, 42, 253, 257)– Mowing operations with slow moving vehicles.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 – New traffic pattern as part of the bridge construction work over Compton Creek and Norfolk Southern Railway. Traffic has been routed onto new section of roadway, 0.1 mile south of Route 663 (Island Ford Road) to 0.16 mile south of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road). Expect daily lane closures and 24-hour shoulder closures. Estimated completion for bridge work is fall 2013.

Various roads – Utility tree trimming with flagger traffic control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion end of summer.

 

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 615, various locations – Paving with flagger controlled traffic.  Estimated completion October 2013.

Route 654, various locations – Paving with flagger controlled traffic.  Estimated completion October 2013.

Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) – Compton Creek/Norfolk Southern Railroad Bridge project. New alignment of Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Memorial Highway). Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, is permanently closed. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to Route 686. Signs will be posted.

Estimated completion fall 2013.

Various roads – Guardrail upgrades with daytime shoulder closures. Occasional nighttime lane closures. Monday to Friday, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Estimated completion Jan. 14, 2014.

Route 11 (NEW) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Route 11 and Route 42 (Woodstock) – New intersection construction of East Reservoir Road and Route 11. Flagger controlled traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday to Friday. Be alert for new traffic patterns and temporary signals. Estimated completion May 2014. 

Route 55 (NEW)Left and right lane closures for guardrail removal and replacement, from 0.14 miles west of Route 754 to 0.17 miles west of Route 48, August 5 to August 9, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 600 (Zepp Road) in Cedar Creek over Shell Run – Box culvert replacement. Width restriction is 10 feet and speed is reduced to 23 mph. Traffic controlled by flaggers during the day and stop and proceed at night. Estimated completion August 31, 2013.

Route 623 (Back Road) (NEW)Road closed in Mt. Olive area for pipe replacement, August 6 and August 7, weather permitting. Southbound traffic will detour via Route 601 east to Route 11 south to Route 651 west to Route 623. Northbound traffic will detour via Route 651 east to Route 11 north to Route 601 west to Route 623.

Route 629 – Paving from Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) to Main Street. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

Route 681 (Alonzaville Road) (NEW)Road closed in the Fairview area for pipe replacement, August 8 and August 9, weather permitting. Southbound traffic will detour via Route 604 east to Route 623 south to Route 676 west to Route 681. Northbound traffic will detour via Route 676 east to Route 623 north to Route 604 west to Route 681.

Route 850 – Paving from Route 629 to dead end. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.

Various roads (NEW) – Utility tree trimming. Flagger control during daylight hours. Monday to Friday.

Vegetation management may occur district wide on various routes.

 

Motorists are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
