What's Being Done?
VDOT’s 2017-2022 Six-Year Improvement Plan includes full-funding to improve the Interstate 81 exit 19 ramps in the Abingdon area of Washington County. The project will improve traffic flow and safety at one of southwestern Virginia’s busiest interchanges.
The project includes improvements to the exit 19 on and off ramps; realign a portion of Empire Drive; add traffic signals at two locations; improve how traffic merges onto southbound I-81; add turn lanes to Route 11 at the northbound off ramp; and widen a curve along the southbound off ramp.
The project, estimated at $7 million, is currently being designed. Right of way acquisition begins summer 2019, and the project will be advertised for construction bids summer 2020.
