Project at a Glance
What's Being Done
Preliminary Engineering is underway for the following safety improvements on Interstate 81 in Wythe and Smyth counties:- Extension of the northbound off-ramp at Exit 77 in Wythe County: Because Exit 77 is heavily utilized by tractor-trailers, the northbound ramp extension will provide extra space and keep traffic from backing into the travel lanes of Interstate 81. Cost - $1.4 million.
- Elevation correction on I-81 southbound at Milepost 76 in Wythe County: The project will correct the flatness of the elevation which will improve pavement drainage during wet weather. Cost - $4.7 million.
- Elevation correction on I-81 north and southbound at Milepost 46 in Smyth County: The project will correct the flatness of the elevation which will improve pavement drainage during wet weather. Cost - $1.1 million.
- Extension of north and southbound deceleration lanes at Exit 80 in Wythe County: Similar to Exit 77 in Wythe County, Exit 80 is also heavily traveled by tractor-trailers. The extension of the deceleration lanes will provide ample space for the vehicles wanting to access the Exit 80 area. Cost - $1.9 million.
