In May 2010 The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved construction of Phase II of the Route 58 widening between Abingdon and Damascus.

The project was funded using American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars.

Two additional widening projects for Route 58 between Abingdon to Damascus remain:

- Route 708 (Rhea Valley) to just east of Route 638 (Lacy Drive): Right of way acquisition and construction are contingent on future funding.
