The Route 757 (Wise Norton Road) widening project, constructed by Estes Brothers, Inc., Jonesville, was completed October 2017 following approximately 18 months of work to improve one of the busiest secondary highways in the county.
The route serves as a key connection between downtown Wise, Route 23 and multiple businesses along Route 757.
The $5.1 million construction project began in spring 2016 and consisted of widening one mile of Route 757 between Business Route 23 in the Town of Wise and Route 23 in Norton.
Including preliminary engineering, right of way and construction, the total cost for the project was approximately $10.8 million, which included over $2.6 million in local matching funds and just under $3 million in coal severance funds.
The new roadway has wider travel lanes and a 13-foot-wide center turn lane. The project also included curb and gutter, as well as a sidewalk on the west side of Route 757.
The project was completed one month early and was within budget.
Project Purpose and Benefits
The Route 757 (Wise-Norton Road) project in Wise County will widen a one-mile section of the route to increase traffic capacity and improve safety.
Route 757 is currently two 12-foot-wide travel lanes. The new roadway will have two 14-foot-wide travel lanes and a 13-foot-wide center turn lane. The project also includes curb and gutter and a sidewalk on the west side of Route 757.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded the $5.1 million construction project in March 2016 to Estes Brothers, Inc., Jonesville.
