Attend a Public Hearing
VDOT invites residents and other interested parties to attend a design public hearing on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Fluvanna County Public Library, 214 Commons Boulevard, Palmyra, VA 22963.
The public hearing is an opportunity to give VDOT comments and/or suggestions regarding the proposed project. Representatives from VDOT will be available to answer questions and take public comments.
Written comments may also be sent to John Rose, Project Manager, VDOT Culpeper District, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, or John.Rose1@vdot.virginia.gov. A comment worksheet is linked below.
The purpose of the project is to construct a roundabout at the existing "T" intersection of Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) and Route 618 (Lake Monticello Road).
VDOT originally proposed to construct a left-turn lane at this intersection to reduce the number of rear-end and left-turn collisions. However, in 2015, Fluvanna County applied for $2.9 million in additional funding through SMART SCALE to construct a roundabout at this intersection. The project was ranked as one of the top five projects in the commonwealth for safety and was subsequently funded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board in June 2016.
Approximately 7,700 vehicles use Route 53 daily, according to 2016 data. The traffic count on Route 618 is 3,100 vehicles per day.
The project will replace the existing intersection with a single lane roundabout to improve traffic safety and more effeciently move traffic through the intersection. The roundabout will include enhanced street lighting and pedestrian accommodations.
A 5-foot sidewalk along the northeast quadrant of the intersection and along the south side of Route 618 will accommodate pedestrians. A marked crosswalk across Route 618 will connect the existing JAUNT bus stop in the parking lot of the Effort Baptist Church with future Park and Ride spaces that are planned to be included in the proposed development to the north of the intersection.
Construction is anticipated to take about one year and will require periodic lane closures. The public will be notified about traffic impacts and changes through media reports, social media posts and 511.
