Project Details

Two future projects will improve traffic operations at the I-64/Route 29 interchange at exit 118 in Charlottesville:

  • From I-64 westbound to Route 29 northbound, a dual through/right-merge lane will be added on Route 29 to eliminate the weave pattern onto Fontaine Avenue. The Charlottesville-Albemarle Metropolitan Planning Organization applied for and received $2.9 million in funding for this project through SMART SCALE.
  • From Route 29 southbound to I-64 eastbound, a Highway Safety Improvement Program-funded project will remove a loop ramp and add a traffic signal for modified interstate access, which will eliminate the weave movement on the ramp that has been identified as a factor in many crashes. Its budget is $1.3 million.
