Project Purpose
This project will improve the existing unsignalized "T" intersection of Route 600 (South Boston Road) and Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) to improve safety and increase the efficiency of traffic movements through this intersection.
What is Proposed?
The project will realign Route 53 and replace the current "T" intersection with a roundabout.
The approaches to the intersection on Route 53 will be shifted to the south to eliminate the current sharp curves and improve sight distances for vehicles approaching the intersection.
VDOT evaluated several options to improve safety at the intersection, including installing a signal to control traffic. The analysis showed a roundabout would be the best solution.
Route 600 currently carries approximately 4,600 vehicles per day; Route 53 carries 6,400 vehicles per day.
