Project Purpose
The primary purpose of this project is to replace the Route 231 bridge over Mulatto Run in Madison County.
The current concrete bridge was built in 1932 and, at 23 feet wide, is considered significantly substandard in width. Its sufficiency rating is 29.5 on a scale of 0 (poor) to 100 (very good). The rating considers adequacy, whether the bridge is functionally obsolete and the level of service provided to the public.
The Mulatto Run bridge carries 3,337 vehicles per day, according to a 2009 count.
What is Proposed?
VDOT proposes to replace the existing bridge with a concrete structure and new approaches on both ends. The new bridge will have 12-foot travel lanes and 8-foot paved shoulders.
Route 231 will remain open throughout construction, maintaining traffic flow.
