Project Purpose
The primary purpose of this project is to improve the intersection of Route 15/29 Business and Route 229 in the town of Culpeper. Approximately 28,000 vehicles per day use this intersection.
What is Proposed?
The improvements include a two-lane roundabout that will replace the current signalized intersection. A sidewalk will be built on the west side of Route 15/29 and a 10-foot-wide shared use path will be built on the east side of Route 229 and the north side of Route 15/29. The intersection will also accommodate the future construction of the planned Inner Loop road.
Route 229 north of the intersection to Fairview Avenue will be expanded to four lanes from the current two lanes. The intersection approaches on Route 15/29 Business will also be reconstructed to tie into the roundabout.
As part of the design of this project, a traffic analysis was done to compare the function of a roundabout with a signalized intersection. This study concluded that a roundabout will provide more efficient traffic movements and a safer intersection.
