Est Completion Date
Estimated total project cost is $22.4 million
Shirley Contracting Company
This project will build a new Interstate 95 overpass on Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) in Spotsylvania County, and provide improvements to interstate ramps, Mudd Tavern Road east of I-95 and Mallard Road.
Construction will begin in October 2017, and is scheduled to be completed in September 2019.
As part of its design-build proposal, Shirley Contracting created a modified design concept that improves traffic flow at the Exit 118 interchange on I-95 while minimizing the amount of right of way needed to build the project. The proposed concept also limits traffic impacts on Route 606 during construction.
New I-95 Northbound Off-Ramp Opens March 21, 2019
Traffic exiting Interstate 95 northbound at Exit 118 (Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County will be shifted onto a new off-ramp starting Thursday, March 21 after the morning rush hour.
Ramp traffic exiting I-95 northbound will intersect with Mallard Road at a new traffic signal.
The traffic signal will be activated on Tuesday, March 19, and will flash for approximately 48 hours to allow motorists to adjust to its presence.
On Thursday, March 21, the traffic signal will be placed into full color operation when traffic is shifted onto the new off-ramp after the peak morning travel period.
Travelers will not see any change to the I-95 northbound on-ramp at Exit 118 at this time. Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) traffic will continue to use the existing on-ramp to access I-95 northbound. A new northbound on-ramp will open when the project is complete in summer 2019.
When construction is finished, two additional traffic signals will be activated. The first at the intersection of Mallard Road, Mudd Tavern Road and Dominion Raceway Avenue and second at the I-95 southbound on-ramp, I-95 southbound off-ramp and Mudd Tavern Road intersection.
