Route 628 (Smith Station Road), Turn Lanes and Signal Modification

Project at a Glance

Begin Date
Construction begins summer 2015

Estimated cost is $1.7 million

Greg Huffman, VDOT Project Manager
Kelly Hannon, VDOT Communications Manager

Project Overview

This project will add a lane on Smith Station Road and lengthen the left turn lane on the northbound approach to Courthouse Road.

This will result in separate left, through traffic, and right turn lanes for northbound traffic on Smith Station Road.

After the project is complete, VDOT's analysis shows the line of waiting vehicles in the afternoon peak hour traveling northbound on Smith Station Road will be reduced from 4,375 feet to under 600 feet.

We will also modify the traffic signal to remove the poles from the median to improve safety at the intersection.
