Features
About the ProjectThis project will replace the Battlefield Boulevard interchange on I-64 and widen two miles of the interstate from six lanes to fourteen lanes to help improve traffic and cut down on congestion. Part of the widening includes two extra lanes in each direction that are separated from the main flow of traffic to help with merging on and off the interstate. Work will begin near the exit for Greenbrier Mall (exit 289) and stretch to just before the I-464 interchange (exit 291). Construction is scheduled to take just over three years and will finish up around July 31, 2009.
The most challenging part of the project will be replacing the Battlefield Boulevard interchange. Crews will completely replace the bridge over the interstate with a newer and better interchange that will be able to carry more cars during rush hour time periods. They’ll also widen the bridge to three lanes in each direction. Don’t worry, the bridge will stay open to traffic even during construction!
Part of the project also includes an HOV lane in each direction and new exit ramps that will help separate traffic coming onto the interstate from traffic leaving the interstate. The project features five new bridges and four new lanes in each direction.
What's Being Done
Construction ScheduleWhile schedules sometimes change as a result of weather conditions or other factors, here is our general plan for the project. We’ll add more information and steps to the process as we move along.
First – Crews plan to start clearing the roadway. They’ll remove bushes and trees in the way of construction and put up construction signs and barrels. They’ll also lower the speed limit to 50 mph.
Next – Crews will focus on replacing Battlefield Bridge and widening the interstate at the same time. They’ll put in new drainage outlets and start building the new ramps to get traffic off of the existing loops that make up the interchange. The ramps will empty traffic onto Battlefield Boulevard at a traffic signal, where you’ll be able to choose to turn left or right. They’ll also be adding two extra lanes that will stay separate from the interstate to help with merging on and off, just like the ones near the Greenbrier interchange.
Then – Crews will replace the Battlefield Bridge, one half at a time. We plan to pave the median and move traffic over onto it so that we can start on the first half. When we finish with the first half, we’ll switch everyone onto the new lanes and start on the second half of the bridge. We’ll continue to keep traffic flowing over the bridge, two lanes in each direction throughout construction.
Next – We’ll start building the new loops for traffic to enter and exit the interstate. These will be larger than the old ramps, and will carry more cars at a higher speed. You’ll also see more widening happening along the interstate itself.
