Berkley Bridge Grid Replacement Project
The Berkley Bridge Grid Deck Replacement project will replace four concrete filled sections of the I-264 bridge over a six-week period beginning at the end of April. Each of the four bridge deck section replacements require a weekend bridge closure to allow crews access to the work site and for the concrete to set after the work is complete. Closures will begin on Friday night at 8 p.m. and will be removed by Monday morning at 5 a.m. Crews are replacing the existing steel grid deck with a new galvanized steel grid deck filled with fiber reinforced concrete to extend bridge deck life. The work will include balancing the new decks and joint repair of the concrete decks at the bridge abutments. The Midtown Tunnel is the suggested alternate route during the closures.
Impact to Motorists
The replacement work will require four weekend lane closures beginning each Friday at 8 p.m. and re-opening on Monday mornings at 5 a.m.
Westbound closures:
Friday, April 23, through Monday, April 25
Friday, April 30, through Monday, May 3
Eastbound closures:
Friday, May 14, through Monday, May 16
Friday, June 4, through Monday, June 7
When eastbound lanes are closed, westbound lanes will remain open and when westbound lanes are closed, eastbound lanes will remain open.
Alternate dates for weather: Friday, May 7, to Monday, May 10, and Friday, June 18, to Monday, June 21
Most direct alternates are the Midtown Tunnel, Campostella Bridge and I-464.
Impact to Pedestrians and Bicyclists
After completing the work on the westbound bridge in April and May, crews will begin replacing the eastbound bridge decks. The multi-use footpath for pedestrians and bicyclists along the east side of the bridge will be inaccessible while crews are conducting work on the east spans in May and June.

Project Need
This work is necessary to ensure the structural integrity of the lift span for the future. Span deterioration was identified during regular bridge inspection and was scheduled for replacement as soon as funding, weather and temperatures permitted. Inspected every two years, the last Berkley Bridge inspection was conducted on November 19, 2009.
Suggested Detour
The suggested detour is the Route 58 Midtown Tunnel, The Campostella Bridge, or I-464.
