Accomack and Northampton
This project involves installing shoulder rumble strips on both sides of Route 13 north and south in Accomack and Northampton Counties, from Seaside Road to the Maryland state line. The primary speed limit through the segment is 55 miles per hour, with locations within the towns that are posted at 45 miles per hour.
Traffic studies indicate that Route 13 in Accomack and Northampton Counties has an elevated fatality rate compared to similar primary routes throughout the Commonwealth. Fatigued and distracted drivers account for a significant number of roadway departure crashes, and shoulder rumble strips are a cost-effective and proven means of reducing these types of accidents. For most of the roadway on Route 13, it will not be necessary to make any modifications to the existing shoulders to accommodate the rumble strips.
