About this Project
The Ironbound Road (Route 615) improvement project is located between Strawberry Plains Road (Route 616) and Longhill Connector Road (Route 612). The project specifications call for widening portions of Ironbound Road from two lanes to four with two travel lanes in each direction, improvements to intersections in the project area, additional turn lanes and a shared use recreational path.
Improved Safety
This project will improve safety and turning movements at Berkeley Middle School. Additional turning lanes will be incorporated into the intersection with Monticello Avenue. A raised median from Monticello Avenue to approximately Carriage Road will control left turn movements. An additional multi-use path on the west side of Ironbound Road will connect to the existing multi-use path on Monticello Avenue and provide safe riding and walking areas.
Phased Construction Schedule
The project is being constructed in three phases. Phase one began in fall 2010 with roadway construction north of New Town Avenue on the west side of Ironbound Road, and was completed the first week of January 2012.
Construction of phase two started the first week of January 2012. Traffic shifted to the new southbound lanes for construction in the northbound lanes. During this phase construction activities are concentrated in the Strawberry Plains area and on the east side of Ironbound Road throughout the length of the project.
Phase three will begin in fall 2012 and will include the final configuration on Ironbound Road at Carriage Road. Crews will work on medians, curbing, crosswalks and landscaping.
During all three phases of construction, transit services may be altered to reduce potential delays to passengers as a result of construction activities. Motorists should contact Williamsburg Transit for additional information.
Project Updates
In design development, James City County has made the decision that right of way and easements are needed to accommodate the construction. James City County Housing Authority has coordinated driveway relocation with residents along Ironbound Road between Watford Lane and Carriage Road.
