This project involves the replacement of the bridge carrying the southbound lanes of Sussex Drive (Route 301) over the CSX railroad tracks approximately 3 miles north of the Emporia city limits. The limits of the project are from 0.3 miles north of the railroad tracks (near Blanks Lane) to 0.3 miles south of the railroad tracks (near Country Club Road) for a total project length of approximately 0.6 miles.
- Route 301 Northbound traffic is not being affected. There will be no construction on the northbound bridge and traffic patterns will not change during construction.
- Route 301 Southbound local traffic will have access to their properties during construction.
- Access to Country Club Road will remain unchanged and available during construction.
This bridge replacement project was advertised for construction in September 2014. Curtis Contracting was awarded the contract for $4.8 million. Notice to Proceed was given in March of 2015, and construction began on May 18, 2015. The bridge was closed at that time, and construction is expected to be completed by summer of 2017.
Demolition of the old bridge has been completed. Crews are now driving piles for the new bridge abutments as well as constructing mechanically stabilized earth walls for the new bridge approaches.
Drivers heading south on Route 301 will be detoured to I-95 for the life of the project. Please get onto I-95 at Exit 17, and take I-95 to Exit 13, which will take you back to Route 301 South.
Crews have scheduled road work northbound on Route 301 North (Sussex Drive) bridge over the CSX railroad tracks, about 3 miles north of the town of Emporia. The left northbound lane will remain closed until late summer for road work.
