Project Information:
Project 1:
The first project would span 8.4 miles
from Jefferson Avenue/
Route 143 in Newport News (Exit 255) to Route 143
exit near York
County (Exit 247). This
project would widen I-64 from 4 lanes (2 in each direction) to 6 lanes (3 in
each direction). Currently, $86.8 million has been allocated for Fiscal Years
2008-2013 in the Six-Year Plan for this project. Right-of-Way acquisition and
Preliminary Engineering is fully funded. Construction remains partially funded.
Project 2:
Project Two is 4.6 miles and would
extend from the Route 143 exit near York County
(Exit 247) to the Route 199 exit in James City
County (Exit 242). At this
time, Project Two does not have the funding to begin Right of Way acquisition,
Preliminary Engineering or construction.
Project 3: (not
scheduled)
Project Three would run approximately
18 miles long and extends from Route 199 in James City
County (Exit 242) to past
the Old Stage Road/Route 30 exit near the New Kent County Line (Exit 227). At
this time, Project Three does not have the funding to begin Right of Way
acquisition, Preliminary Engineering or construction.
Where do the funds come from?
Most of the funds that would be allocated towards these projects come from interstate, federal funding (80%). To receive this funding it has to be considered a priority for the region by the federal government.
The span of I-64 on the peninsula that is considered an area of need by VDOT is broken down into three separate projects starting at Jefferson Avenue and continuing up to New Kent, totaling a little over 31 miles of roadway. At this time, none of these three projects are scheduled projects.
Does Virginia have to acquire any additional land along the Highway in order to facilitate the widening?
VDOT would have to acquire land at most of the interchanges. As a rule, VDOT usually prefers to widen roadway using the existing Right of Way (replacing the median with a drivable surface). Before anything is done and a plan is laid out for the widening of I-64, the design would have to go through the public hearing process for public input.
