What improvements did this project involve?

The project involved improvements to the I-295/I-64 interchange in western Henrico County, widening of Pouncey Tract Road and construction of a new flyover ramp from eastbound I-64 to southbound I-295.

I-295/I-64 interchange & flyover ramp

  • A lane was added to the outside of I-64 in both directions between Route 288 and Route 250 (Broad St. exit 178).
     
  • The one-lane ramp from northbound I-295 to westbound I-64 (towards Charlottesville) was widened to two lanes.
     
  • A new, two-lane flyover ramp was built to carry 14,000 drivers from eastbound I-64 traffic to southbound I-295. The ramp is 1,765 feet long and 35 feet above I-64.

Pouncey Tract Road widening

  • Road work took place between Twin Hickory Lake Drive and the first signal north of Broad Street.
     
  • The former two lane bridge over I-64 was  replaced with a new, four-lane bridge. The new bridge is 338 feet long with a raised median, sidewalks and aluminum railing on each side.
     
  • Modifications were made to the first traffic signal north of Broad Street.

What was the purpose of this project?

The flyover bridge and additional lanes improve the flow of traffic between I-295 and Route 288.

How long was the construction?

April 2006-May 2009 

Where were the soundwalls built?

The project involved the installation of two sound walls. One along I-64 east, west of Pouncey Tract Road between I-64 and the Reflections at West Creek complex. The second sound wall was built between northbound I-295 towards I-64 and the Twin Hickory neighborhoods of Waters Edge, Cobblestone Landing and Parsons Walk. This sound wall does not extend westbound past the Pouncey Tract bridge.
