Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to VDOT’s construction Web site for the I-295 Flyover project in western Henrico County.

The western region of Richmond near Short Pump has experienced a dramatic increase in population and commerce in the last five years. Traffic has also increased significantly. In addition, the completion of Route 288 in late 2004 brought more travelers from southern sections of Richmond to the Short Pump area. In 2005, the section of I-64 between Route 288 and Broad Street, a frequently congested area during rush hour, had more than 55,000 cars per day. That number is expected to increase to 74,000 cars per day by 2026.

From spring 2006 to spring 2009, VDOT will improve areas along I-295 and I-64 in western Henrico County to provide a better flow of traffic between Route 288 and I-295. This project includes widening Pouncey Tract Road, construction of a new flyover ramp from eastbound I-64 to I-295 south and adding an additional travel lane along I-64 east and westbound from Route 288 to Route 250 (Broad Street). On this Web site, you’ll find project updates and details as well as the construction schedule for this project.

Although some of the construction will take place during the day, we will continue to provide motorists with access to local streets and highways for the duration of this project, particularly during rush hour. VDOT contractor, English Construction Company, Inc. will implement major lane closures along I-295 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and along Pouncey Tract Road and I-64 between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. In addition, there will be periodic overnight detours of I-64 traffic onto Broad Street to allow contractors to place structural steel for the new bridge and demolish two existing bridges. VDOT will announce upcoming lane closures and detours on this Web site as well as to local media.

We’re committed to providing a safe work zone for the traveling public and for the workers on this project. Please stay alert and drive carefully through this work zone.
