VDOT Advances Study for I-66 Westbound Spot Improvements Inside Beltway

January 23, 2007 Public Workshop Recap

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) conducted a Public Workshop for the I-66 Westbound Spot Improvement Design Study on January 23, 2007, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. Approximately 200 people attended the meeting.

The purpose of the meeting was to solicit the community's thoughts and ideas about the three proposed spot improvements, which include:

  • Extending the on-ramp from Fairfax Drive to Sycamore Street
  • Adding a lane on the Washington Boulevard on-ramp to extend the acceleration lane from Washington Boulevard to the Dulles Airport Access Highway
  • Extending the on-ramp from Spout Run to Glebe Road.

The public was notified of the meeting via a newsletter mailed to 46,170 individuals/groups, which included people from the project's mailing list and postal patrons residing in the I-66 corridor, extending into Prince William County and Loudoun County. News releases, newspaper advertisements, e-mail broadcasts, the project Web site, and project INFO line further advertised the meeting.

At the meeting, the public had an opportunity to view study displays and right-of-way maps. A formal presentation began at 7:00 p.m. After the presentation, attendees participated in small conversation groups. The groups' focus was in gathering public input regarding:

Issues that should be addressed in the design of the spot improvements.
Comments on other improvements that can be addressed during the spot improvements' design.
The benefits of the improvements.

Comments from these three topics were gathered through comment cards and comment sheets. A fourth topic from the comment sheet asked for other comments about the spot improvements that would assist VDOT during the course of the study. Comments in response to this topic were received from comment sheets, correspondence, the project Web site, and e-mail.

The meeting concluded at approximately 8:30 p.m. The presentation and comments received through the closing date of the comment period, 5 p.m. on February 2, 2007, are posted for download through the project Web site.
