Project description
The primary purpose of this project is to provide safety improvements on Route 460/29 (Richmond Highway) from Route 501 (Campbell Avenue) to Route 29 (Monacan Parkway) through the implementation of access management. A review of traffic data shows a significant increase in vehicular traffic accidents after the opening of the Madison Heights Bypass. To address the increase of traffic accidents, the four crossovers and the Tyreeanna Road intersection would be closed and accommodations for westbound U-turns from the eastbound lane at the intersection Concord Turnpike provided by means of a "jughandle". The jughandle provides for U-turns and left turns at Concord Turnpike.
The center median crossovers at Truck Body Corp./Falwell Airport, the trailer park entrance west of the railroad bridge, the Tyreeanna/Holcomb Path Road intersection and the median crossover at Templeton's Market would be closed. The median crossover at the Concord Turnpike traffic signal would remain open. The Tyreeanna Road access to Route 460/29 would close and all traffic to and from Tyreeanna Road would access Route 460/29 via Concord Turnpike.
The existing traffic signal at Concord Turnpike and Route 460 would remain in operation and a new jughandle approach to the signal would be constructed to allow eastbound traffic to turn onto Concord Turnpike and also to U-turn on Route 460.
