Project at a Glance
What's Being Done
The Brookneal 2020 Transportation Plan identified the need for a bypass for Route 501 around the Town of Brookneal. The project was included in the Virginia Transportation Act 2000. Route 501 is an arterial highway providing service from South Boston and points south to Lynchburg and points north.
Why is this road being built?
The bypass is needed to remove a traffic bottleneck at the existing at-grade railroad crossing and enhance the Town's and the region's economic development potential. A bypass will eliminate an at-grade railroad crossing for Route 501 through traffic and allow for a safer grade separation with the railroad on the northwest of Town.
Project Updates
Currently the study is funded through the FHWA's Final location approval. Should a Build Corridor be selected, and when funds are made available, the design stage of the project's development will begin.Contacts
