The Canal Walk in Richmond.
Richmond Riverfront Phase
The Canal Walk in Richmond will serve as the end point for the Virginia Capital Trail. It will connect the Trail with the canal and the retail and residential areas located in historic Shockoe Bottom along the James River.
This phase is divided into three sections:
Section One
- A one-mile segment from Canal Walk to the Great Ship Lock
- VDOT, the City of Richmond, Venture Richmond and CSX Transportation are all working together to make sure that this section is designed and constructed to the same standards and specifications as the other phases of the Trail
Section Two
- A three-quarter-mile segment from Great Ship Lock Park to Intermediate Terminal
- The Trail will be part of a new public park located along the riverfront
Section Three
- A one-and-a-half-mile segment from Intermediate Terminal to the beginning of the Varina phase in Henrico County
- This segment will be financed by the private sector
- It will extend through the Village of Rockett’s Landing
Cost: The combined cost to design and construct section one and section two is approximately $3.0 million. The design and construction of Section three will be completely funded by the developers of Rockett’s Landing.
Status:A ground breaking ceremony for the construction of section one was held in Aug. 2007. Section two and section three are currently being designed.
