Backlick Road over CSX Railroad
|Bridge replacement to allow for additional CSX Railroad tracks in Fairfax County|
Project at a Glance
Note: The bridge is closed until fall 2018.
About the Project
This project, which is part of the Atlantic Gateway improvements, is replacing the existing bridge that carries Backlick Road (Route 617) over the CSX Railroad with a slightly higher bridge that accommodates the addition of new rail tracks.
Other improvements include:
- Wider shared-use path on bridge
- New pavement on both ends of the bridge
- New curb and gutter on the southern approach to the bridge
- Wider entry at the north end of the bridge to provide more room for vehicles, particularly trucks
The bridge is located approximately 300 feet east of the Backlick Road/Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) intersection south of I-95.

August 2018 - The bridge's south abutment will be completed soon. Backfilling of the abutment and building the roadway approach to the south end of the bridge will then begin.
The north abutment will soon begin to have concrete placed. The abutment is scheduled for completion in early fall.
Steel beams are scheduled to be installed over the railroad mid-fall.
The bridge is closed to all traffic until fall 2018.
Traffic is being detoured (see detour map on right) via Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286), Loisdale Road, Newington Road and Cinder Bed Road back to Backlick Road.
During the bridge closure, there is also a temporary access road open to all traffic connecting Backlick Road to the ramp from Telegraph Road (Route 611) to northbound Fairfax County Parkway. Drivers can access Backlick Road from the ramp, and vice versa.
