What's Being Done

Beulah Road is open to two-way traffic, and motorists can now make turns from Maple Avenue to Beulah Road. The detour is no longer in place.

The existing two lane roadway from Maple Avenue to Sideling Court was improved with reconstructed  pavement, new drainage, curb and gutter and sidewalk.

The project was completed ahead of its late May 2008 completion date.

Why is this road being built?

Beulah Road is an urban minor arterial road and a major commuter and transit access to the area's shopping and business district. Due to increases in the amount and type of traffic using the corridor, the street required improvements to provide better traffic service. These improvements were identified as the addition of new pavement, curb and gutter, a new, closed drainage system and pedestrian facilities.

The Vienna Town Council recognized these needs and in November 1995 requested the Department develop a plan for the improvements to the corridor with the least disruption to existing trees lining the roadway.

The project design was developed through the public hearing process which was held in January 2003 . The Town of Vienna passed a resolution in October 2003 approving the project.

Features

The proposed typical section provides for two 12’ (3.6m) lanes, a 2’ (0.6m) curb and gutter, a 2’ (0.6m) buffer strip and a 5’ (1.5m) sidewalk. The improvements also include reconstructed intersections and entrances and horizontal and vertical improvements for sight distances. In addition, the approach to Maple Avenue continues to include a left turning storage lane.

Parking is not  permitted on Beulah Road upon completion of the project.

The stormwater run-off is contained in a new pipe conveyance system that eliminates the previous failing roadside ditches. An underdrain system helps to drain the sub grade and extends pavement life.
