Project Updates

This project has been completed and accepted on June 29, 2007. The Contractor is currently completing the final punch-list items; while VDOT's project inspection team is in process of completing the project books and submitting them to our auditing firm.

What's Being Done

VDOT is changing the right turn lane for eastbound traffic on Braddock Road turning south on to Backlick Road. The turn lane will be changed from a free flowing un-signalized lane to a turn lane controlled by the traffic light.

Features

The intersection improvements will eliminate the traffic island and “slip lane” at the southwest corner of the intersection to a straight turn lane controlled by the traffic light.

Impact on Traffic

With an average daily traffic of 37,000 vehicles per day crews will work during the off peak traffic volume hours between 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Environmental Considerations

During construction, all reasonable efforts will be made to protect the environment with respect dust, silt, erosion, and noise. Night time work will not be permitted after 6:00 PM and before 9:00 AM. The perimeter of the disturbed ground and the drainage inlet will be protected by a silt trap or fence. All areas of ground disturbed will be seeded with landscape quality grass seed. Construction will conform to the Virginia Dept. of Soil and Water Conservation Regulations.

Why is the project being built

To eliminate a high number of rear end and sideswipe collisions between vehicles traveling southbound on Backlick Road and vehicles entering on to southbound Baklick Road from the unsignalized free flowing “slip lane” off of westbound Braddock Road.
