What's Being Done

Proposed widening, from two lanes to six lanes, of Centreville road (Rte 657) from West Ox Road to Frying Pan Road. This project is a priority within the Fairfax County Government’s Secondary Road Program.

Project Updates

Martin and Gass mobilized on October 14, 2008. Perimeter controls have been installed throughout the project. The Contractor is currently test pitting to locate existing utilities ahead of time. Grade excavation and storm sewer installations are ongoing.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

During design, all reasonable efforts have been made to avoid and minimize impacts to environmental resources such as wetlands, streams and historical sites. No federal environmental document is required at this time due to state funding sources; however, any water quality permits required from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Virginia Marine Resources Commission or the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality have been obtained. As required by these agencies, the Department will mitigate for any stream and wetland impacts. Now that the construction has been started, all reasonable efforts will be made to protect the environment with respect to dust control, soil erosion and siltation control and groundwater protection. Contractor has already started installing perimeter silt fence throughout the project.

Construction will conform to nationwide Best Management Practices, VDOT specifications and special provisions, and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s regulations.

RIGHT-OF-WAY

Efforts will continue to be made to minimize land impacts. The current concept to widen Centreville Road will impact one commercial property and possibly several residential properties. As we further coordinate and finalize the project development, additional easements for utility relocations may be required beyond the proposed or existing right-of-way plans. Property owners will be informed of the exact locations and use of the easements during the right-of-way acquisition process prior to construction.

Impact on Traffic

Lane closures are performed for utility relocation and road construction on a daily basis. There is minimal impact on traffic.
