What's Being Done
The Virginia Department of Transportation is considering adding ramp connections to I-95 for motorists heading to Tysons Corner, Washington D.C. and the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from the Franconia Springfield Parkway and Old Keene Mill Road.VDOT is also proposing to add connections from southbound I-95 to east and westbound Franconia Springfield Parkway to improve accessibility, convenience, and safety to the area transportation network in addition to relieving traffic congestion on Old Keene Mill Road.
The Franconia Springfield Parkway provides access to the proposed Springfield Metrorail station and access between residential and business communities east and west of I-95 and currently provides direct access to the HOV lanes.
A citizen information meeting was held in 1997 (as part of the Springfield Interchange improvement project), where designs were presented and comments were received. These comments were evaluated and incorporated where feasible.
The current Fairfax County Government Comprehensive Plan identified the future addition of one HOV lane in each direction on the Franconia Springfield Parkway. This project allows for the addition of those lanes.
