About the Project

This project adds almost two miles of bicycle lanes along Gallows Road between the Dunn Loring Metro station area and Tysons Corner in Fairfax County. All work is being done within existing right-of-way.

The existing off-road asphalt trail and concrete sidewalk along Gallows Road will remain for pedestrians, young riders, family groups, etc. The on-road lanes are intended for riders who are comfortable riding with traffic.

This project is being funded by both state funds and federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds requested by Fairfax County.

Project Updates

A little over a half-mile of the two-mile stretch is now complete from Cottage Street to Idylwood Road near the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in Vienna.

The entire first phase, including engineering and construction, was completed in about six months and was installed over the summer as part of the VDOT repaving schedule.

The second phase, which will extend about a mile and a half from Idylwood Road to Old Courthouse Road, is expected to open to cyclists in late fall 2010.
