About the Project
Hunter Station Road links Lawyers Road and Hunter Mill Road in Fairfax and carries about 600 vehicles per day. This project will remove the existing bridge over Snakeden Branch and install a pre-fabricated temporary bridge under an emergency contract this summer.
The steel-beam and timber-deck bridge carries a single lane of traffic and was built in 1986. Inspections in 2012 revealed steel beam corrosion, and it was posted with a six-ton weight limit in July 2012. This restriction currently impacts school transportation as buses cannot cross the bridge.
The temporary bridge will continue to carry a single lane but will have no weight restriction. The bridge is expected to be in place until funds for a permanent bridge are available. The approximate cost of a permanent bridge is a about $3 million.
Crews will close the road to traffic in late July 2013, remove the existing bridge, build new abutments, install the prefabricated bridge and re-open the road by the end of August 2013.
During construction, drivers will be detoured via Hunter Station Road, Lawyers, Road and Hunter Mill Road (see detour map).
