What's Being Done
VDOT is rebuilding the ramp that carries traffic from Duke Street (Route 236) eastbound to I-395 northbound. All trucks, buses and recreational vehicles are being detoured from this ramp through the end of 2009. The ramp is still accessible to cars.Reconstruction of the overpass includes installing a new concrete deck, approach curb, guardrails and new lighting.
The work is being completed in three stages:
Stage I: curb will be
demolished on the left side of the ramp to create a 10-foot travel
lane. Stage 1 work has been completed.
Stage II: traffic will be shifted onto the 10-foot lane to demolish and reconstruct the right side of the bridge deck. The demolition of the right side of the bridge deck has been completed, and six spans of the bridge deck have been reconstructed. Weather permitting, and barring unforeseen circumstances, the remaining seven spans will be reconstructed by the end of December 2008.
Stage
III: traffic will be shifted onto the reconstructed right side of the bridge
deck to demolish and reconstruct the left side.
Impact on Traffic
NOTE: All trucks, buses and RVs accessing northbound I-395 from eastbound Duke Street (VA Route 236) are being detoured during construction. These vehicles will travel east past the ramp, cross I-395, exit onto Van Dorn Street, turn left at the traffic signal, and take Route 236 west to the I-395 north exit on the right. Detour signs are posted along the route.
Cars are still able to access the ramp as usual.
