Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be sound walls?
Noise barriers are currently under consideration at the locations shown on the plans and on the Design Public Hearing displays.

Will additional right of way be required?
Most of the right of way and easements required to construct the interchange were dedicated in the 1980’s when this section of the Fairfax County Parkway was constructed. Now, as detailed project design has progressed, several additional small right of way or easement takes have been identified. It should be noted that the proposed right of way and easements shown at the Design Public Hearing do not take into account potential easements that may be required for utility relocations and noise barriers. These easements will be determined as the project is further coordinated and the plans developed.

Will there be a federal environmental document?
Federal funds are currently authorized and future additional funding anticipated for this project. The project’s Environmental Document (Categorical Exclusion) has been approved by the Federal Highway Administration and is available for review at the VDOT District and Fairfax Residency offices.

Will landscaping be included in final construction?
There has been considerable interest expressed relative to the overall aesthetics of the proposed interchange and the visual impact to the Fair Lakes community. VDOT will provide the landscaping treatments possible within their normal guidelines for funding and will continue to work with the community to design an aesthetically pleasing project.

Will there be streetlights?
Lighting currently exists at the I-66 interchange and at the Route 50 interchange. The Fairfax County Parkway/Fair Lakes Parkway Interchange Project will be illuminated between I-66 and Route 50, similar to the lighting provided at the Route 50 interchange.

Will the Parkway be designed with HOV lanes as shown on Fairfax County’s comprehensive plan?
That issue is still under consideration by the County, VDOT and FHWA. VDOT is planning to update the Constrained Long Range Plan in early 2004 to reflect HOV designation for the Parkway. Should the County request VDOT to incorporate HOV design elements into this project, then VDOT will do so and update the public on this issue at a Citizen Information Meeting to possibly be held in 2005. The environmental document, including the air and noise analysis, would also be updated to reflect changes due to the addition of HOV lanes.

How will stormwater management of the roadway be addressed?
This project will create new impervious pavement and sidewalk areas, therefore mandating the control of stormwater coming from these locations. A significant portion of the roadway drainage will be conveyed to either the existing pond(s), maintained by the Peterson Companies on the east side of the Parkway, or to a new VDOT pond to be located in the northwest quadrant of the Fair Lakes intersection/interchange. VDOT is currently analyzing the feasibility of using the existing ponds and is in discussion with the Peterson Companies on a potential agreement.
