Project Status
The current interchange design efforts were initiated in the fall of 2001, with a Citizens’ Information Meeting (CIM) held June 4, 2002. This meeting was conducted to obtain public comment on four conceptual interchange alternatives being considered. Approximately 100 individuals attended this meeting. From the public input received and based on further design analyses, VDOT and Fairfax County selected interchange Alternative 2 as the preferred improvement strategy to be advanced in design. This concept proposes a grade-separated split diamond interchange with the Fairfax County Parkway passing over Fair Lakes Parkway and Monument Drive. Existing Fair Lakes Parkway and Monument Drive will remain at their current grades (elevations) and retain full access to the Fairfax County Parkway via a network of signalized ramps.
Since the selection of the preferred alternative, the Study Team has further refined the design and completed the environmental documentation for the project with the preliminary plans most recently shown at the project’s Design Public Hearing held October 28, 2003 [See the Design Public Hearing Brochure]. These plans depicted the majority of probable impacts due to expansion of the roadway’s width and the necessary property takes within the corridor. Comments received from the Design Public Hearing – citizens, Fairfax County, and various state and local agencies – are now being compiled. From this input, a list of recommendations will be developed for potential inclusion in the final design plans. Full sets of the Design Public Hearing plans and the environmental document are available for viewing at VDOT’s Northern Virginia District Office.
Project approval is to be obtained from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and VDOT’s Chief Engineer prior to the Design Team moving forward with final construction plans.
