Traffic Data
The existing traffic volumes on Fairfax County Parkway vary between 60,000 and 68,000 vehicles on a typical weekday between I-66 and Route 50. Fair Lakes Parkway and Monument Drive presently accommodate approximately 30,000 and 6,000 vehicles each weekday, respectively. By the year 2025, it is anticipated that the number of vehicles per day (vpd) will increase to approximately 118,000 for the Fairfax County Parkway; 47,000 on Fair Lakes Parkway; and 18,000 vpd on Monument Drive.

The traffic forecasts developed utilized an accepted regional travel simulation model (Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments) to determine the roadway capacity needs for year 2025 conditions. Several of the factors taken into account in the use of this model include projected land uses, transit services, and the proposed/existing roadway network.

Improvements
The existing Fair Lakes Parkway intersection with Fairfax County Parkway is signalized and operates at an unacceptable level of service. Northbound Fairfax County Parkway traffic currently backs up to the I-66 interchange during the AM peak period and the southbound Parkway traffic queues back to the Route 50 interchange during the PM peak period. Weekend traffic is also very congested due in part to the activity at the shopping complexes nearby.

The Fairfax County Parkway is additionally signalized at Monument Drive with the operation of this intersection being hampered by the backups experienced in the Fair Lakes Parkway intersection.

The existing levels of service for the Fairfax County Parkway as well as Fair Lakes Parkway and Monument Drive are unacceptable and will continue to deteriorate in the future as traffic volumes increase. The proposed interchange(s) will greatly improve traffic operations along this segment of the Fairfax County Parkway by separating its north and southbound through movements from those accessing both Fair Lakes Parkway and Monument Drive.
