Project Description
The purpose of this project is to replace the existing, deficient two lane bridge over the Swift Creek Reservoir with a new bridge at the same location. In early 2010, VDOT deemed the bridge unsafe for vehicles exceeding three tons.
The new bridge will have two 15-foot wide lanes with curb and gutter (the existing bridge has two 9-foot wide lanes). The wider lanes will accommodate cyclists. Once the bridge replacement is complete, the road will be re-paved.
Traffic Impacts
In order to facilitate construction, a temporary traffic signal will be installed. One lane of alternating traffic will be open across the bridge at all times. Flaggers will also be used to direct construction vehicles to and from the project site. The current 45 mph speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph during construction.
The new bridge will be built one half at a time. The first half will be built adjacent to the existing bridge and should be completed by September 2012. At that time, traffic will be shifted to one lane across the new structure and the weight limit will be removed.
A 5.4 mile alternate route is available by taking Otterdale Road to Old Hundred Road to Watermill Parkway.
