I-64 Bridge Over Acca

What's Being Done

This project involved widening and replacing the deck and steel support beams on the I-64 bridge over the Acca railroad-switching yard. The bridge is just west of the I-64/I-95 Bryan Park interchange in Henrico County (Exit 186).

Impact on Traffic

Due to the scope of this project, work zones were in place around the clock for the duration of the improvement process.

The project impacted traffic in three phases:

Phase 1: Most work took place on the outside lanes and underneath the bridge. Lanes were narrowed to 11 feet throughout the work zone.

Phase 2: This phase began in Jan. 2006 and involved an exit restriction for all vehicles traveling from I-195 north to I-64 west. Motorists were restricted from crossing the construction zone and exiting onto Staples Mill Road.


Phase 3: The Staples Mill Road exit restriction for I-195 travelers was lifted and 11-foot lane widths remained as crews completed the bridge rehabilitation. I-64 eastbound opened to five lanes across the Acca Yard bridge as crews neared completion of the eastbound bridge. Remaining work on I-64 west was completed during this phase.
