What will be done to the bridge?

Contractors will mill down the existing bridge pavement and apply a new layer of latex concrete. They will also paint the bridge and repair joints, abutments and steel sections. These improvements will not only result in a smoother ride for drivers, but will also extend the life of the bridge.

Where is this project located?

The Shockoe Creek Bridge is located on I-64 near the I-95 interchange in Richmond. The bridge straddles the Old Buckingham Branch railway and Shockoe Creek.

How will the bridge repairs impact traffic?

To reduce the impact on drivers, the majority of the work will be done overnight. However, there will be six planned weekend lane closures where the east or westbound side of the bridge will be reduced to one lane from Friday night through Monday morning (prior to rush hour). Delays are expected on I-64 and I-95 during these weekend lane closures.

Why is the Shockoe Valley Bridge not part of this project?

Based on inspections, the Shockoe Creek Bridge is in more critical need of repairs than the nearby Shockoe Valley Bridge. VDOT is looking into improvements to the Shockoe Valley Bridge as part of future bridge maintenance planning.
