Proposed
I-64 Widening |
Project at a Glance
I-64, east of Richmond
I-64 widening is planned for the east end of Richmond to reduce congestion and provide a better flow of traffic. Approximately 70,000 vehicles travel along I-64 east and west between the New Kent/James City county line and Airport Drive each day.The total cost for this project would be at least $325 million. The six year plan has at least $18 million in funding allocated for preliminary engineering (includes design, environmental documents and utility relocation). The majority of this project will be federally funded, with some state match (typically 10%).
The 24.2 miles of widening is broken into three separate projects, which means the project could be built in phases if VDOT receives construction funding for only one project at a time. If this happens, the first section to be widened would be between Airport Drive and I-295. The other two phases would follow soon thereafter if construction funding is available.
State law requires 100% of construction funding to be in place by the end of construction. Once construction funding is available, it could take up to a year to begin the construction since the project will need to be advertised to potential contractors and the Commonwealth Transportation Board would need to approve the bid.
2009-2014 Six Year Plan:
One mile west of Airport Dr. to one mile east of I-295 (4.9 mile section)
One mile east of I-295 to one mile east of Rt. 249 (4.6 mile section)
One mile east of Rt. 249 to one mile east of Rt. 33 (14.7 mile section)
I-64 widening through Hampton Roads
Features
The widening would begin one mile west of Airport Drive in Henrico County and continue to one mile east of Rt. 33 in New Kent County (24.2 total miles). I-64 would be widened from four to six lanes (three lanes in each direction--will be adding one lane in each direction to the existing highway). VDOT would be widening to the center of the highway, which means there would be no need to acquire right of way from landowners on the outside of the highway.
I-64, west of Richmond
VDOT is widening I-64 just west of Richmond in the Short Pump area between I-295 and Route 288 from two to three lanes in each direction. This is part of the I-295 flyover project. This project is underway and will be completed in spring 2009.There are also plans to widen I-64 between Route 288 and Route 622 in Goochland County (4.5 miles). The $23 million project is in the design phase with construction anticipated to begin in 2011.
