Construction began in May 2014. The speed limit has been reduced within the entire work zone to 60 mph. For maximum safety, VDOT typically reduces speed limits for the entire project length needed during construction.
Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures throughout construction, which is expected to wrap up in fall 2015.
What's Being Done
Interstate 64 will be widened from four lanes to six lanes eastbound from Route 623 to Route 271 (Pouncey Tract Road) and westbound from Route 271 (Pouncey Tract Road) to Route 622. The additional through lanes will be constructed to the inside of existing I-64 in both directions.
The I-64/Route 623 interchange improvements will include upgrading the existing traffic signal, widening the westbound I-64 off ramp to Route 623 to provide an additional turn lane, widening the I-64 eastbound off ramp to Route 623 to provide an additional turn lane and adding a left turn lane on Route 623 south to I-64 east.
