What's Being Done
The project will widen Interstate 64 (I-64) and improve the I-64/Route 623 Interchange. I-64 will be widened from four lanes to six lanes eastbound from Route 623 to Pouncey Tract Road and westbound from Pouncey Tract Road to Route 622. The additional through lanes will be constructed to the inside of existing I-64 in both directions.
The I-64/Route 623 Interchange improvements will include upgrading the existing traffic signal, widening the westbound I-64 off ramp to Route 623 to provide an additional turn lane, widening the I-64 eastbound off ramp to Route 623 to provide an additional turn lane and adding a left turn lane on Route 623 south to I-64 east.
The following schedule has been proposed:
Design approval – Summer 2012
Begin construction – Summer/Fall 2013
Completion – Fall 2015

Where the Project is Located
I-64 eastbound from Route 623 to Pouncey Tract Road, I-64 westbound from Pouncey Tract Road to Route 622, I-64 east and westbound off ramps at Route 623 and southbound Route 623 to I-64 east.

Total cost: $34.7 million
Engineering of roadway plans: $2.7 million
Right of way acquisition, relocation assistance and utility relocation: $231,000
Construction: $31.8 million
This project is in the early design stage. Therefore, costs above are subject to change. The project will be financed using a combination of federal and state funds.
