What's Being Done

VDOT recently began work to improve traffic flow on Interstate 95 north and south between the I-295 interchange and Lewistown Road. The project will include reassigning travel lanes to best meet current traffic demand. The work will include paving and applying new pavement markings in the area.

Once complete, drivers in both directions will experience reduced congestion during peak travel times in this area, with northbound travel times reduced by up to 38% and southbound travel times reduced by up to 50%.

I-95 north between I-295 and Sliding Hill Road:

  • The current left lane drop on I-95 north (just north of I-295) will now be a continuous travel lane heading towards Sliding Hill Road.
  • The Sliding Hill Road exit (Exit 86) will now accommodate two travel lanes on the off-ramp

I-95 north between Sliding Hill Road and Lewistown Road:

  • The current left lane drop on I-95 north (just north of Sliding Hill Road) will now be a continuous travel lane heading towards Lewistown Road.
  • The right lane will exit onto the Lewistown Road ramp (Exit 89).

I-95 south between Sliding Hill Road and I-295:

  • The acceleration lane from Sliding Hill Road will continue as a fourth travel lane in this area.
  • The center lane on I-95 south is now an option lane that traffic can use to continue travel on I-95 south or take to I-295.

Traffic Impacts

Drivers can expect alternating single and double lane closures in both directions from 9 p.m.-7 a.m. nightly through late 2017, when project completion in expected. Intermittent ramp closures may be needed and will be listed in the Weekly District Highway Alerts and on 511 Virginia. All work is weather permitting.
