What is being built?

This project will widen the 2.1-mile section of Route 11/460 (West Main Street) that starts just west of Salem and extends to Route 830 (Technology Drive).  The road is being widened from three lanes to four lanes with a raised median.

The project entails widening the current two-lane section of Route 11/460 to a four-lane divided highway with a raised median and turn lanes.

Work also will include constructing a 44-foot long bridge over Little Bear Rock Branch, adding sidewalks to tie into existing pedestrian routes around Fort Lewis Elementary School and providing a paved shoulder to accommodate pedestrian and bicycle traffic.  In addition, the existing traffic signals at Alleghany Drive and Daugherty Drive will be replaced.

Widening the road will eliminate a bottleneck on Route 11/460 between four lane sections.

Traffic Impacts

Periodic lane closures may occur at various locations throughout the project while work is being performed. The speed limit is reduced to 35

Work to replace the bridge over Little Bear Rock Branch may cause shifts in traffic patterns on Route 11/460 near its intersection with Fort Lewis Church Road. A barrier wall is installed on the bridge and both travel lanes are narrowed. Temporary traffic signals are installed at the intersection of Daugherty Road. Motorists should expect changing traffic patterns, use caution and expect delays in the work zone.

FORT LEWIS CHURCH ROAD PAVING – As part of the Route 11/460 widening project outside of the City of Salem, Fort Lewis Church Road will be closed beginning Monday, April 21 for paving and drainage work.  Detour signs will be in place to direct traffic. Weather permitting the road will reopen on Friday, April 25.
