The primary purpose of this project is to replace the Walnut Avenue bridge over Glade Creek in the Town of Vinton.  The new bridge will include curb and gutter, sidewalks and bike accommodations.

Three construction alternatives currently are being considered for the construction of the Walnut Avenue bridge.

Alternative one would require traffic to be detoured from Walnut Avenue to Route 24 during construction.  Under this alternative the existing bridge would be demolished and a new bridge would be built in its place. Using this alternative the construction phase is expected to last one year.  The expected cost of alternative one is $1 million.

Alternative two would maintain two-way traffic on Walnut Avenue.  A temporary bridge would be constructed beside the existing bridge while it is replaced. Traffic would be shifted onto the temporary bridge during construction.  Using this alternative, the construction phase is expected to last two years.  The expected cost of alternative two is $1.57 million.

Alternative three would maintain two-way traffic on Walnut Avenue.  Under this alternative the width of the bridge would be expanded to the south.  Traffic would be shifted to the south and the northern portion of the bridge would be demolished.  The expected cost of alternative three is $1.2 million.
