Welcome to VDOT's "Emporia 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The recently completed Emporia 2020 Transportation Plan was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the City's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study were the corporate limits of the City of Emporia. The following roadway segments were evaluated:

  • Route 58 (including bypass) from West Corporate Limits to East Corporate Limits
  • Route 58 Business (Atlantic Street) between both ends of the Route 58 Bypass
  • Route 301 (Main Street) from the North Corporate Limits to the South Corporate Limits
  • Baker Street from Main Street to Halifax Street
  • Belfield Drive from Atlantic Street to Weaver Avenue
  • Briggs Street from Clay Street to Tillar Street
  • Brunswick Avenue from Church Street to Main Street
  • Church Street from West Corporate Limits to Brunswick Avenue
  • Clay Street from Low Ground Road to Briggs Street
  • Davis Street from Atlantic Street to the East Corporate Limits
  • Greensville Avenue from Main Street to Tillar Street
  • Halifax Street from Valley Street to Main Street
  • Hicksford Avenue from Main Street to Lee Street
  • Jefferson Street from West Avenue to Main Street
  • Laurel Street from Temple Avenue to South Main Street
  • Lee Street from Southampton Street to Hicksford Avenue
  • Low Ground Road from Main Street to South Corporate Limits
  • Purdy Road from Main Street to the north corporate limits
  • Reese Street from Southampton Street to Sunnyside Road
  • Ruffin Street from Main Street to Halifax Street
  • Southampton Street from Halifax Street to Atlantic Street
  • Sunnyside Road from Reese Street to the East Corporate Limits
  • Temple Avenue from Laurel Street to Jefferson Street
  • Tillar Street from Briggs Street to Hicksford Avenue
  • Valley Street from Main Street to Halifax Street
  • Weaver Avenue from Belfield Drive to Main Street
  • West Avenue from Brunswick Avenue to Jefferson Street
  • West End Boulevard from Gay Street to Main Street

 

Data collected for the study of the city included:

  • traffic counts conducted in November and December 1999
  • accident report information from 1996 through 1998
  • VDOT database of roadway geometric conditions (dimensions)
  • review of tourism and goods movement issues in the City

The above information was analyzed to identify Emporia's 2020 transportation needs based upon highway capacity, geometry, and safety as well as other concerns that may be raised by local officials and citizens. A pubic meeting was held on November 6, 2001 at the Emporia Municipal Building by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the City of Emporia. The purpose of the meeting was to present the draft recommendations included in the Emporia 2020 Transportation Plan and to allow Emporia citizens to comment on the plan. The Emporia 2020 Transportation Plan was approved by the Emporia Town Council on December 4, 2001.
