Welcome to VDOT's "Galax 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The recently completed Galax 2020 Transportation Plan was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the City's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study were the corporate limits of the City of Galax. The following roadway segments were evaluated:
- US 58 within the City limits
- Route 89 from City Limits to US 58
- Route 912 (Meadow Street) from Route 89 to US 58
- Route 915 (Poplar Knob) from Meadow Street to the City Limits
- Route 908 (Glendale) from Stuart Drive to the City Limits
Data collected for the study of the City included:
- traffic counts conducted in August 1999
- accident report information from 1996 through 1999
- VDOT database of roadway physical conditions (pavement width, median width, number of lanes, etc.)
- survey of tourism and goods movement (trucking) issues in the City
The above information was analyzed to identify 2020 transportation needs in Galax based upon highway capacity, physical conditions, and safety as well as other concerns that may be raised by local officials and citizens. A pubic meeting was held on June 7, 2001 at the Galax Municipal Building by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the City of Galax. The purpose of the meeting was to present the draft recommendations included in the Galax 2020 Transportation Plan and to allow Galax citizens to comment on the plan. The Galax 2020 Transportation Plan was approved by the Galax City Council on September 10, 2001.
