Welcome to VDOT's "Lexington 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The study was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the City's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study area are the corporate limits of the City of Lexington. The following roadway segments were evaluated:
- Main Street from Link Road to the North Corporate Limit
- White Street from Main Street to Jefferson Street
- Jefferson Street from White Street to Main Street
- North Lee Highway from the South Corporate Limit to the North Corporate Limit
- Nelson Street from the West Corporate Limit to the East Corporate Limit
- Thornhill Road from the South Corporate Limit to Link Road
- Link Road from Thornhill Road to Main Street
- Borden Road from the West Corporate Limit to Nelson Street
- Diamond Street from Lewis Street to Main Street
- Enfield Road from the West Corporate Limit to Lime Kiln Road
- Glasgow Street from McLaughlin Street to Nelson Street
- Henry Street from Jefferson Street to Main Street
- Houston Street from the South Corporate Limit to Main Street
- Jackson Avenue from Ross Road to White Street
- Lee Street from Nelson Street to Washington Street
- Lewis Street from Nelson Street to Diamond Street
- Lime Kiln Road from Enfield Road to McLaughlin Street
- McDowell Street from Jefferson Street to Main Street
- McLaughlin Street from White Street to Glasgow Street
- Preston Street from Jefferson Street to Main Street
- Ross Road from the West Corporate Limit to Jackson Avenue
- Spotswood Drive from Houston Street to Nelson Street
- Thornhill Road from Link Road to Main Street
- Washington Street from Lewis Street to Main Street
Data collected for the study of the City includes:
- traffic counts conducted in Spring 2001
- accident report information from 1996 through 1998
- VDOT database of roadway geometric conditions (dimensions)
- review of tourism and goods movement issues in the City
The above information was analyzed to identify Lexington's 2020 transportation needs based upon highway capacity, geometry, and safety as well as other concerns raised by local officials and citizens. A public meeting was held Thursday, November 7, 2002 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the County Administration Building to present the study findings and seek your input on the recommendations proposed for future improvements. The Lexington 2020 Transportation Plan was adopted on March 20, 2003.
