Welcome to VDOT's "Marion 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The recently completed Marion 2020 Transportation Plan was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the Town's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study were the corporate limits of the Town of Marion. The following roadway segments were evaluated:
- Route 11 (Main Street) from the West Corporate Limits to the East Corporate Limits
- Church Street from the South Corporate Limits to Chilhowie Street
- Cherry Street from Poston Street to Commerce Street
- Route 16 (Commerce Street) from the South Corporate Limits to Pendleton Street
- Commerce Street from Pendleton Street to East Lee Street
- Pendleton Street from Commerce Street to Main Street
- East Lee Street from North Church Street to Chatham Hill Road
- Chatham Hill Road from Main Street to the North Corporate Limits
- Chilhowie Street from the west corporate limits to Main Street
- Route 16 (Park Boulevard) from Main Street to the North Corporate Limits
- Keller Lane from Route 11 (North Main Street) to the North Corporate Limits
- Johnston Road from Route 11 (North Main Street) to the South Corporate Limits
Data collected for the study of the town included:
- traffic counts conducted in September and December 1999
- accident report information from 1996 through 1998
- VDOT database of roadway geometric conditions (dimensions)
- review of tourism and goods movement issues in the Town
The above information was analyzed to identify Marion's 2020 transportation needs based upon highway capacity, geometry, and safety as well as other concerns that may be raised by local officials and citizens. A pubic meeting was held on July 16, 2001 at the Marion Municipal Building by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Town of Marion. The purpose of the meeting was to present the draft recommendations included in the Marion 2020 Transportation Plan and to allow Marion citizens to comment on the plan. The Marion 2020 Transportation Plan was approved by the Marion Town Council on August 20, 2001.
