Welcome to VDOT's "South Boston 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The study was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the town's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study are the corporate limits of the Town of South Boston. The following roadway segments were evaluated:
- Hodges Street from North Main Street to Route 360
- North Main Street from Wilborn Avenue to the North Corporate Limit
- Seymour Drive from Main Street to Route 360
- John Randolph Boulevard from the South Corporate Limit to the East Corporate Limit
- Main Street from the South Corporate Limit to Main Street/Route 129
- Wilborn Avenue from Main Street/Route 129 to Hamilton Boulevard
- Halifax Road from Hamilton Boulevard to the North Corporate Limit
- Broad Street from Main Street to Third Street
- Third Street from Wilborn Avenue to Broad Street
- Broad Street Extended from Third Street to Wilborn Avenue
- Berry Hill Road from the West Corporate Limit to Summit Drive
- Hamilton Boulevard from the West Corporate Limit to Route 360
- College Street from North Main Street to Hamilton Boulevard
- Edmunds Street from Summit Drive to North Main Street
- Fenton Street from Jeffress Street to Marshall Avenue
- Jeffress Street from North Main Street to Fenton Street
- Marshall Street from Seymour Drive to Hodges Street
- Railroad Avenue from Edmunds Street to Seymour Drive
- Riley Avenue from Seymour Drive to Vaughan Street
- Seymour Drive from Summit Drive to Main Street
- Vaughan Street from Riley Avenue to Pine Avenue
- Watkins Avenue from Edmunds Street to Seymour Drive
- Webster Street from Wilborn Avenue to North Main Street
- Factory Street from Seymour Drive to Main Street
Data collected for the study of the town includes:
- Traffic counts conducted in November 1999
- Accident report information from 1996 through 1998
- VDOT database of roadway geometric conditions (dimensions)
- Review of tourism and goods movement issues in the town
The above information was analyzed to identify South Boston's 2020 transportation needs based upon highway capacity, geometry, and safety as well as other concerns raised by local officials and citizens. A public meeting was held Monday, May 13 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Council Chambers, 502 Yancy Street to present the study findings and seek your input on the recommendations proposed for future improvements. The South Boston 2020 Transportation Plan was adopted by the Town on July 8, 2002.
