Welcome to VDOT’s "Abingdon 2020 Transportation Plan" study web site. The recently completed Abingdon 2020 Transportation Plan was conducted to provide long term needs assessment for the Town's thoroughfare highway system. The boundaries of the study were the corporate limits of the Town of Abingdon. The following roadway segments were evaluated:
- Main Street from the eastern corporate limits to the western corporate limits
- Valley Street from Russell Road to Waldon Road
- Porterfield Highway from Main Street to the northern corporate limits
- Russell Road from Main Street to Porterfield Highway
- Wyndale Road from the northern corporate limits to Main Street
- Hillman Highway from the eastern corporate limits to Main Street
- Cummings Street (Route 75) from the southern corporate limits to Valley Street
- Jonesboro Road from Interstate 81 to Main Street
- White’s Mill Road from Valley Street to the northern corporate limits
- Pecan Street between Main and Valley Streets
- Tanner Street between Main and Valley Streets
- Court Street between Main and Valley Streets
Data collected for the study of the town included:
- traffic counts conducted in April ’99
- accident report information from 1996 through 1998
- VDOT database of roadway geometric conditions (dimensions)
- review of tourism and goods movement issues in the Town
The above information was analyzed to identify Abingdon’s 2020 transportation needs based upon highway capacity, geometry, and safety as well as other concerns that may be raised by local officials and citizens. A pubic meeting was held on May 30, 2001 at the Abingdon Municipal Building by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Town of Abingdon. The purpose of the meeting was to present the draft recommendations included in the Abingdon 2020 Transportation Plan and to allow Abingdon citizens to comment on the plan. The Abingdon 2020 Transportation Plan was approved by the Abingdon Town Council on August 6, 2001.
